A reference music streamer and server designed to get the most out of your DAC
Grimm components are typically ordered through Fern & Roby as part of a broader system conversation. Current lead times vary by product and configuration, and may extend several weeks or longer. We encourage clients to contact us before purchase to discuss system matching, availability, and fulfillment timing.
The Grimm Audio MU1 is a reference-level digital source that combines a Roon Core server and music streamer in a single, purpose-built component.
At its core is Grimm’s ultra-low jitter clocking and FPGA-based processing, designed to refine timing and improve signal integrity before it reaches your DAC. Rather than adding another layer to your system, the MU1 is designed to improve what your DAC receives by refining timing, reducing noise and improving overall signal coherence.
The MU1 is available through Fern & Roby, including optional 4TB internal storage configuration.
As an authorized Grimm Audio dealer, we recommend this component in systems where the DAC is already strong, but the source can be improved.
What the MU1 does in a system
The MU1 functions as the digital source in your system:
Runs Roon Core (no separate server required)
Acts as a music streamer
Outputs digital signal to your DAC via AES or S/PDIF
Performs high-precision up-sampling before conversion
In most systems, it replaces a separate Roon server, a network streamer, and USB-based computer audio systems.
Rather than passing data through unchanged, the MU1 actively processes and refines the signal before it reaches your DAC. The result is a simpler, more focused digital front end, often with meaningful improvements in clarity, timing, and overall musical coherence.
Engineering approach
The MU1 is built around a focus on signal integrity and timing, two factors that have a significant impact on digital playback but are often underestimated.
At its core is Grimm’s ultra-low jitter clocking architecture (measured at sub-picosecond levels), designed to maintain precise timing throughout the signal chain. This is paired with an in-house FPGA platform that performs high-precision up-sampling and format conversion before the signal reaches your DAC.
By handling this processing upstream, with a high degree of precision and control, the MU1 reduces the computational burden on the DAC and minimizes timing-related errors.
In practice, this results in a cleaner, more stable signal delivered to your DAC, allowing downstream components to perform at a higher level.
All digital signals passing through the MU1 are re-clocked and processed before output, helping reduce noise and timing inconsistencies at the source.
Who the MU1 is for
Systems with a high-quality DAC already in place
Listeners using Roon as their primary interface
Those looking to improve digital playback without changing their DAC
Systems where refinement, timing, and resolution matter
Listeners who prefer improving upstream rather than replacing downstream components
Purchasing through Fern & Roby
As an authorized Grimm Audio dealer, we routinely help clients integrate the MU1 into systems built around DACs from Grimm, Weiss, and other digital front ends we know well through long-term listening and system building.
Christopher works directly with clients on DAC pairing, streaming setup, digital connectivity, storage configuration, and long-term system planning.
Our perspective
We don’t think of the MU1 as just a streamer.
It’s best understood as a way of controlling and refining the digital signal before it reaches your DAC. In systems where everything downstream is already resolving, that upstream improvement can be significant.
It’s often one of the most effective ways to improve a digital front end without replacing the DAC itself.
Listening with the MU1
What stands out with the MU1 is not a change in character, but a shift in clarity and ease.
Music becomes more resolved, more dimensional, and less constrained, without sounding processed or overly analytical. In well-matched systems, it can feel like the system itself has stepped forward.
Why we chose to carry the Grimm Audio MU1
The MU1 stood out to us for:
Its focus on signal integrity and timing
Meaningful improvement without adding complexity
Seamless integration with Roon-based systems
Long-term listening stability and reliability
Optional 4TB internal configuration
It’s a component that tends to be most meaningful in systems where the rest of the chain is already highly refined.
Full MU1 specifications are available on the Grimm Audio website.
Thinking about the MU1 in your system?
Questions around DAC pairing, digital connectivity, server architecture, networking, and overall system balance are often just as important as the streamer itself. If you'd like to discuss how the MU1 might fit into your system, Christopher works directly with clients on system integration and configuration.
MU1 vs MU2

We’re always happy to help think through which approach makes more sense in your system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MU1 in stock at Fern & Roby?
Grimm products are configured and ordered through Fern & Roby based on system requirements and current availability. Lead times vary by product and configuration and may extend several weeks or longer. We encourage clients to contact us before purchase to discuss timing, setup, and system matching.
Do I need a DAC with the MU1?
Yes. The MU1 is a digital source and requires an external DAC.
What is the difference between the MU1 and MU2?
The MU1 is a digital source (streamer and server), while the Grimm MU2 includes an integrated DAC and preamp (we love the MU2, read Christopher’s listening notes).
Can the MU1 replace a Roon server?
Yes. It includes full Roon Core functionality.
