These are all places that were never designed to be dedicated listening rooms. And even if some of them are dedicated listening areas now, they still might open into other shared areas of the house. The rooms are almost never ideal. They can actually present some of the most challenging room acoustics you’ll encounter. Symmetry is considered essential for accuracy in audio, but in practice, hotel rooms are inherently asymmetrical, usually entered through a compressed hallway next to the bathroom. You’ll need to decide whether to set up your speakers along the longer or the shorter wall, based on the room and your system’s needs. The things you would typically try to do to avoid boxy midpoints might not apply. You need enough seats to allow visitors to sit and listen, but it’s hard for more than one or two people to be in the sweet spot of any triangle you try to build. So people in the rear of the room might experience some hollow sound. Things that worked in a similar configuration at a past show might not sound great this time around, for whatever reason: you’ll have to figure it out iteratively, in real time. But I’ve honestly found all of these challenges to be instructive. This is different in every room. The speakers may need to be asymmetrically placed to compensate for the unbalanced room. Then we slowly shape the system so the sound comes together in the space we’re given. I fill the empty dresser drawers in the furniture we can’t get rid of with supplies, brochures and inventory (and sometimes extra clothes) so that the drawers aren’t acting like resonant empty boxes. Every audio show room is temporary. We spend days setting up a system that will only exist for a weekend before it gets packed back into boxes and shipped home again. Its mission is to preserve a vast collection of national and international audiovisual history, including thousands of analog discs. Many of these are large-format 16” transcription discs. These require highly specialized playback systems capable of multiple speeds, exceptional stability, and precise calibration. For our team, designing this kind of equipment was a deeply enjoyable challenge in that we had to fit all of the mechanical systems into the plinth in a seamlessly integrated way. Archival work has a way of stripping away assumptions. In environments like the NAVCC, signal-to-noise ratios are not theoretical. Each turntable assembly needed to include: A Technics SP10R turntable, selected for its ultra-stable direct-drive motor and exceptionally low wow and flutter A SME M2-12R tonearm, considered essential by the Library for precise tracking and flexible calibration. Crafted from solid American walnut and Richlite, a dense, sustainable composite material made from recycled paper and resin, it balances the density of the resin with the matrix of paper layers. This combination helps break up resonance and reduces vibration , creating a stable platform for both platter and tonearm. The isolation features embedded in the two layers of the plinth improves the isolation and damping of the plinth below the SP10R motor. The challenge wasn’t simply choosing materials. It was understanding how they behave together, over time, and under load. The plinth isn’t meant to draw attention to itself. It was designed to be simple, small, and to sound incredible. When LTA reintroduced it in 2015 they added preamp outputs and realized that every system sounded better with the MicroZOTL in the chain. Humans sense difference exceptionally well and when a platter is spinning inconsistently you will hear it. This is called "Wow" and "Flutter". Most most manufacturers of decks just assume you won't hear this or that you won't care anyways if you do and allow people to start with cheap, inferior products with the knowledge that eventually they will want something better, an outboard motor controller, a more expensive table with a better but simple control... We believe you should be offered the option of buying your last turntable when you buy your first and that a smart motor controller integrated into the design is part of what makes that possible so we include this in every one of our decks. Our turntables are built around our Modular, Active, P.I.D. Drive Unit (we call it the MAP Drive). The MAP Drive incorporates a computer controlled, real-time P.I.D. controller (You can learn about the P.I.D. concept here). The Controller uses "active" feedback from the platter to regulate the performance of the deck. The MAP Drive can be easily removed and swapped out by the end-user for service and replacement. Most turntables in its class use the 60Hz of the AC mains to turn the motor at a fixed speed and then rely on pulley size ratios to achieve the desired platter speed (33 ⅓ or 45 RPM). In this topology, there is no way to account for belt slip, pulley wear or the effects of temperature change on the system. In addition, the mass of the platter design is constrained by the “stall torque” of the motor. A platter of desirable (large) mass would require a motor of undesirable size and noise. By synthesizing the sinusoidal drive waveforms required to turn the motor, the Fern & Roby MAP Drive system is not limited to a fixed motor speed or fixed drive power. This allows for a design with extravagant platter mass coupled to a modestly sized motor. From a standstill, the platter is accelerated gradually to the desired speed in order to stay below the motor’s stall torque. The platter’s speed is determined 48 times per revolution with a precision-cut optical interrupter wheel mounted on its underside. A green LED indicator beside the mode selector switch is used to indicate “in-bounds” platter speed.
