The horn lens itself reproduces frequencies from 1200Hz and up, while a larger, reflex-loaded driver is located in a cabinet below the horn lens, covering the range between 70Hz and 1200Hz.
A self-powered sub containing two 15" woofers rounds out the driver selection and performs duties for the frequencies below 70Hz. A second sub can be supplied for larger environments and for delivery of a low-frequency foundation in stereo.
This entire array is driven through our custom designed, audiophile grade, outboard electronic crossover with separate level controls for all three driver groups. Our crossover's gain controls utilize an encoder driven stepped ladder array so there are no pots in our design, and can all be separately controlled via remote control.
The three separate 24dB per octave band-pass filters employed in the circuit architecture keeps the signals in phase, delivering the signal to the three separate amplifiers used in this system simultaneously.
An excellent internal linear power supply was designed for us by our friends at Linear Tube Audio and is employed in this design. A well-constructed linear power supply has tremendous benefits for the overall sound and is the foundation for a great piece of electronics.
Our crossover is the central nervous system of the Fern & Roby Horn
speaker system, providing excellent control so the system can be set up in any
room with ease. Like most of our designs we try to keep things simple; from the
circuit layout, to the form of the package. Our goal is to think of the end
user's needs and make products that are easy to use and a pleasure to listen to.
We developed and voiced the Horn system around the ZOTL40 power amplifiers made by Linear Tube Audio. We use two of these amplifiers in our system, one for the horn lenses, and the other for the mid-range enclosures. We have a third plate amp for our sub.
Our preference is to supply the Horn system with our recommended amplification, because with this system we are selling a sound quality that we love and can stand behind. But if a client already has their own preferred amplification we are happy to discuss the Horns' requirements and discuss other options to help you get the experience you want.
The Horn Speaker System
The Fern & Roby Horn system is the latest evolution in our journey & exploration in audio—but developing horns has actually been the foundation for everything else we’ve been working on for the past four years.
Great horn systems sound effortless, natural and detailed but in general they are huge and complicated systems to set up. Our goal in developing this system was to deliver the best results horns can produce while shaping the system into a simpler and more compact and manageable footprint.
For us, the Horns are all about having a spectacular system that compliments the lovely space it resides in. We would love to talk to you about how the system can be configured and tailored to your space!
